Cycling Tour from Venice to Porec

This cycling tour from Venice to Porec is an exciting journey along the Adriatic coast through three countries: Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. The history of the ancient Republic of Venice, the “Serenissima” Republic, provides the background for the entire trip.

From Venice (the wonderful “City of Water”), you will cycle along the beaches of the Adriatic coast and across the plains of Friuli before arriving in the fascinating city of Trieste. From Trieste, the route continues along the beautiful Istrian coast before arriving in Porec (the most-visited city in Croatia), with its Euphrasian Basilica, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.

This cycling tour from Venice to Porec is a route of “Moderate” intensity that should be suitable for even novice cyclists with a good level of fitness. Although the route is generally flat, there are some climbs. However, they are short and can be walked easily. There is often the option to shorten or skip sections by taking a bus or train. The roads are almost all paved and the route is designed to ensure that you will spend most of your time away from traffic.

Day 1: Arrival in Mestre.

The starting point of your cycling tour from Venice to Porec is Mestre, which is on the mainland, opposite the island of Venice. Get here early or book an extra night! Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Day 2: Mestre - Jesolo / Caorle Coast, Approx. 25-41 miles (40-65 km) / Climbing 0 m.

Breakfast.

Our representative in Italy will meet you at your hotel at around 9:00 am, to talk about the route and deliver the hire bikes (if booked).

After cycling the few kilometres across to Venice, you will take the ferry (35 minutes, passing in front St Mark’s Square) and the vaporetto (25 minutes) to Punta Sabbioni, the southernmost point of ​​the Adriatic coast (which is just to the north of Venice). From there, you will be cycling along the lovely beaches of the Adriatic coast – be sure to pack your swimwear!

You will spend the night in a hotel along this famous coastline.

Day 3: Jesolo / Caorle Coast - Portogruaro, Approx. 24-38 miles (40-60 km) / Climbing 0 m.

Breakfast.

This morning you will head north, cycling away from the sea and towards the Julian Alps. You will pass through an area with a multitude of “valli da pesca” (stretches of lagoons surrounded by earthen dikes, where fish farming is practiced) and “casoni” (constructions used by fishermen in the past, during the fishing season).

Your destination for today is Portuario, one of the main centres during the era of the “Serenissima Republic of Venice”, with its impressive “Palazzi” (or palaces), cathedral, gates and arcades.

Day 4: Portogruaro - Palmanova / Aquileia, Approx. 38-44 miles (60-70 km) / Climbing 30 m.

Breakfast.

Today you will cycle between the regions of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, crossing an area abundant in water and history, between rivers, canals and ancient Roman cities. Your destination will be either Aquileia (with its Roman excavations) or Palmanova (which is known as “The Starry City” because, from above, the city resembles a 9-pointed star).

You can shorten today’s route by 20 km, by taking a train from Portogruaro to Latisana.

Day 5: Palmanova / Aquileia - Trieste, Approx. 31-44 miles (50-70 km) / Climbing 420 m.

Breakfast.

Today you will cycle back towards the sea and the gulf of Trieste. There are many possible stops along the way, including: Duino, with its two castles; Sistiana, with its lovely bay; and Miramare, with its famous white castle, built in the 19th century on the orders of Archduke Maximilian of Hapsburg and located in a beautiful park.

In the 19th century, Trieste was the principal port of the Hapsburg Empire. It is now a relaxed cosmopolitan city, with a charming atmosphere, a lively street scene, some stunning architecture and a beautiful sea view.

You can shorten today’s route by 30 km, by taking a train from from Monfalcone to Trieste.

Day 6: Trieste - Piran / Portorož, Approx. 28 miles (45 km) / Climbing 470 m.

Breakfast.

This morning, after just a few kilometres, your cycling tour from Venice to Porec will say goodbye to Italy and cross into Slovenia. Cycling mainly on peaceful cycle paths, you will pass through famous holiday resorts such as Koper (for a long time ruled by Venice and then by Austria) and Piran (one of the best-preserved historical towns anywhere on the Adriatic).

Your destination for today is the seaside town of Portorož, one of the most popular resorts in Slovenia, which is renowned for its spa and bathing facilities.

Day 7: Piran/Portorož - Porec, Approx. 34 miles (55 km) / Climbing 470 m.

Desayuno.

Today is your last day of cycling on your cycling tour from Venice to Porec. You will continue to head south, passing through the salt mines of Secovlje, a large Slovenian village with a humid environment which is a key site for ornithologists. Just a little further on you will cross the Croatian border and enter Istria, the largest peninsula on the Adriatic Sea.

The ancient Roman town of Porec is now Croatia’s “capital of tourism”. There are many well-preserved Romanesque houses,  Gothic palaces and other architectural gems around this lovely city, but pride of place must go to the 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.

Day 8: Departure from Porec.

Today is the end of your cycling tour from Venice to Porec! If your flight is from Venice or Treviso, it is possible to return to Venice by Ferry. However, it may be simpler to book a private transfer direct to the airport. In any case, what’s the hurry? Why not spend more time exploring this fabulous part of Europe? Cycling Tour from Venice to Porec: Travel

How to get to Mestre and from Porec

This cycling tour starts in Mestre, near Venice and ends in Porec.

Venice airport is 10 km from Mestre and Treviso airport is just 35 km away. There are direct flights to both airports from many UK and European cities. There are regular buses and trains between Mestre, Venice and Treviso.

The airports closest to Porec are Pula (58 km), Rijeka (90 km), Trieste (120 km), Ljubljana (161 km), Treviso (229 km), Venice (230 km) and Zagreb (268 km). From Porec, it is also possible to return to Venice by ferry. The ferry usually departs at 7:00 am and must be booked in advance.

We can arrange private airport transfers in both Venice and Porec.

If you arrive by car, you can park in Mestre for the duration of the tour. Parking costs from €10 to €15 per day. Some of the hotels that we use in Mestre have private parking, while others use nearby facilities. It is not possible to reserve in advance.

Cycling Tour from Venice to Porec: Hire Bikes

Hire bikes are available in various sizes in unisex/women’s or men’s models. At the moment of booking, you can choose from the following bikes:

  • Touring bike, 27-speed Shimano Deore.
  • Touring bike, 7-speed Shimano Nexus, with back-pedal brake.
  • Hybrid bike, 27-speed Shimano.
  • Electric bike, 9-speed Shimano.
  • Tandem.

Touring bikes have aluminium frames and are fitted with a rear rack, comfort gel saddle, anti-puncture tyres and ergonomic grips. They also feature a quick-release system for adjusting the height of the handlebars.

Hire bikes are supplied with a cycle computer, water bottle, combination lock and a single 20-litre pannier bag for the carriage of spare clothing and food. We also provide a handlebar bag or map holder, a pump, puncture repair kit, spare inner tube and allen keys. (One per room.)

Hire bikes are insured against theft and damage. However, no cover is included for improper use.

Helmets are not compulsory in Italy, even for children. However, in Slovenia they are compulsory for children under 15 and in Croatia for children under 16. They can be hired at the time of booking (only sizes 54-61).

If you plan to cycle out of built-up areas at night or through tunnels, you must bring and wear a reflective vest.

Luggage Transfers

Daily luggage transfers are included in the price of this tour. There is a strict limit of 2 pieces of luggage per person: one with a maximum weight of 20 kg and one with a maximum weight of 10 kg.

A discount is available if luggage transfers are not required.

Weather

In the area of Venice, Slovenia and Croatia, temperatures are usually cool/mild in spring and autumn and hot/humid in summer, with the potential for summer storms. Whenever you travel, please check the weather forecasts and be prepared. It will often be necessary to carry a waterproof jacket. A sun hat and sunscreen are often essential.

On rainy days, all items carried on the bike should be wrapped in plastic to avoid soaking.
