Itinerary Details

Day 1
Arrive Linz

The most convenient airport to fly into for the Danube Family Cycle Tour is Linz, although Vienna, Munich and Salzburg are all reasonably convenient too.

After checking into the hotel and reviewing the route documentation, you should take time to have a look around Linz. This modern city is the capital of Upper Austria. Historic buildings, impressive churches and one of the largest medieval main squares in Central Europe contrast with striking contemporary architecture. Linz is also home to the world’s steepest mountain railway, “Postlingbergbahn”. The views from the top are amazing and, for the kids, a ride on the Grottenbahn “Dragon Express” train is not to be missed!

Day 2
Linz – Mitterkirchen
(Approx 27 miles / 43 km)

Meals: Breakfast

After a delicious breakfast you will be able to collect hire bikes and head off along the river in the direction of Mitterkirchen. Your first highlight awaits you in the Celtic Village; an open-air museum showing how our Iron-Age ancestors lives 2700 years ago. In Mitterkirchen your accommodation will be in a traditional Austrian farmhouse.

Day 3
Mitterkirchen – Persenbeug Area
(Approx  27 miles / 43 km)

Meals: Breakfast

Today your journey from Mitterkirchen will take you past traditional villages and impressive castles nestled on hilltops overlooking the river. On arrival in the picturesque baroque town of Grein, you will be able to visit Austria’s oldest town theatre. If you fancy an ice cream, the selection of flavours at Schörgi’s ice-cream parlour is renowned!

After Grein there may also be time to visit the waterpark at Ardagger, which features a sandy beach as well as attractions for all the family.

Day 4
Persenbeug Area – Wachau Valley
(Approx 31 miles / 49 km)

Meals: Breakfast

On leaving the Persenbeug area you will pass through the world-famous Wachau Valley, renowned as being one of the loveliest riverside landscapes in the world. The beautiful 900-year-old baroque Benedictine abbey overlooking the city of Melk can be seen from many kilometres away and is well worth a visit. After Melk your route continues towards Spitz.

Day 5
Free Day in the Wachau Valley

Meals: Breakfast

Spend an enjoyable day exploring the vineyards and orchards of the Wachau Valley, or relax in the hotel garden while your children have fun in the pool. You may also like to visit one of the local wine cellars in this famous wine-producing region.

Day 6
Wachau Valley – Tulln
(Approx 13 miles / 20 km by Boat &  25 miles / 40 km Cycling)

Meals: Breakfast

Today you will set off by boat* – an adventure that the kids will love! Enjoy the views of the gently sloping vineyards, the monasteries, the castles and the orchards as your Danube Cruise transports you effortlessly along the river to Krems. From Krems you will continue by bike to Tulln – the “Garden City” of Upper Austria.

*The trip to Krems is by train in low season.

Day 7
Tulln – Vienna
(Approx 22 miles / 35 km)

Meals: Breakfast

Today’s short ride will take you past the impressive monastery at Klosterneuburg and on through wooded parkland to arrive at the famed city of Vienna – one of Europe’s most beautiful, elegant and interesting cities! However, the fun isn’t over yet! Your family cycle tour includes a ticket to ride the 65-meter-high giant Ferris wheel that towers over the Prater Park’s numerous attractions, including the planetarium and museum.

Day 8

Meals: Breakfast

There are direct flights from Vienna to most cities, or we can arrange your transport back to Linz if you prefer. However, what’s the rush?! Why not take time to explore Vienna before you leave? We can easily arrange an extension for as long as you like. (Most guests agree that 3 days in Vienna is the minimum required to do this delightful city justice.)

Danube Family Cycling Tour: Travel

Getting to & from Linz & Vienna

Flights & Trains

The Danube Family Cycling Tour starts in Linz, close to the Austrian / German border, and finishes in Vienna.

Linz has an airport and railway station and is reasonably easily accessible from most of Europe.  Vienna is very easy to get to by air from almost everywhere.

If you cannot fly into Linz, the next best option is Salzburg, from where you can take a bus to the central train station (20-40 minutes) then a train to Linz (75 minutes).

If flying into Vienna, you need to take a bus from the airport to the train station (45 minutes), from where there are regular trains to Linz (90 minutes).

If flying into Munich, you need to take a bus to the train station (15 minutes), from where there are regular trains to Linz (3.5 to 4 hours).

Please visit for cheap flights and the Austrian train website to check times, or ask us to organise your transfers.

If travelling to Linz by car, there is free un-secured parking available near the funfair. Secure parking is available from around €40 per week. We can arrange train transfers back to Linz to collect the car at the end of your cycle tour.

If you don’t need to return to Linz to collect a car, it is almost always better to arrange onward travel from Vienna.

Danube Family Cycling Tour: Hire Bikes

Our most popular hire bike is the 21-speed hybrid, which is available in men’s and women’s models. We can also supply 7-speed unisex touring bikes with back-pedal “coaster” brakes, as well as electric bikes, children’s bikes, trailer bikes, baby / toddler trailers, child seats and even dog trailers! Please see “Prices” for hire charges.

All adult rental bikes are equipped with a speedometer. When bikes are hired, one bike per room is equipped with double pannier bags for the carriage of spare clothing and food. In addition, each room also receives a free gift of a handlebar bag for the carriage of documents, maps and other small items.

Helmets are compulsory for children aged under 12 years and are recommended for everyone. They can be purchased locally.
