After checking into the hotel and reviewing the route documentation, you should take time to have a look around Linz. This modern city is the capital of Upper Austria. Historic buildings, impressive churches and one of the largest medieval main squares in Central Europe contrast with striking contemporary architecture. Linz is also home to the world’s steepest mountain railway, the ‘Postlingbergbahn’. The views from the top are amazing and, for the kids, a ride on the Grottenbahn “Dragon Express” train is not to be missed!
Linz – Mitterkirchen
(Approx 27 miles / 43 km)
After a delicious breakfast you will be able to collect hire bikes and head off along the river in the direction of Mitterkirchen. Your first highlight awaits you in the Celtic Village; an open-air museum showing how our Iron-Age ancestors lives 2700 years ago. In Mitterkirchen your accommodation will be in a traditional Austrian farmhouse.

Wachau Valley – Tulln
(Approx 13 miles / 20 km by Boat & 25 miles / 40 km Cycling)
Today you will set off by boat – an adventure that the kids will love! Enjoy the views of the gently sloping vineyards, the monasteries, the castles and the orchards as your Danube Cruise transports you effortlessly along the river to Krems. From Krems you will continue by bike to Tulln – the “Garden City” of Upper Austria.
Tulln – Vienna
(Approx 22 miles / 35 km)
Today´s short ride will take you past the impressive monastery at Klosterneuburg and on through wooded parkland to arrive at the famed city of Vienna, one of Europe’s most beautiful, elegant and interesting cities. However, the fun doesn´t stop yet! Your family cycle tour includes a ticket to ride the 65-meter-high giant Ferris wheel that towers over the Prater Park´s numerous attractions, including the planetarium and museum.
There are direct flights from Vienna to most cities, or we can arrange your transport back to Linz if you prefer. However, what´s the rush?! Why not take time to explore Vienna before you leave? The Danube Family Cycling Tour starts in Linz, close to the Austrian / German border, and finishes in Vienna. Linz has an airport and railway station and is reasonably easily accessible from most of Europe. Vienna is very easy to get to by air from almost everywhere.
If you cannot fly into Linz, the next best option is Salzburg, from where you can take a bus to the central train station (20-40 minutes) then a train to Linz (75 minutes).
If flying into Vienna, you need to take a bus from the airport to the train station (45 minutes), from where there are regular trains to Linz (90 minutes).
If flying into Munich, you need to take a bus to the train station (15 minutes), from where there are regular trains to Linz (3.5 to 4 hours).
If travelling to Linz by car, there is free un-secured parking available near the funfair. Secure parking is available from around €40 per week. We can arrange train transfers back to Linz to collect the car at the end of your Family Cycle Tour.
If you don´t need to return to Linz to collect a car, it is almost always better to arrange onward travel from Vienna.

We can also supply 7-speed unisex touring bikes with back-pedal “coaster” brakes, as well as electric bikes, children’s bikes, trailer bikes, baby / toddler trailers, child seats and even dog trailers!
