Cycling Tour of Palanga Resort & the Curonian Spit
This cycling holiday in Lithuania is a picturesque cycling tour along the Baltic Sea coast and the Nemunas River Delta, visiting Palanga Resort and the Curonian Spit National Park, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The route partly follows the Seaside Cycle Route, which was the first officially-signposted, cycle route in Lithuania, and allows a fascinating insight into traditional Lithuanian country life.
The tour begins & ends in the historic coastal town of Klaipeda, which boasts a rich, turbulent history and fascinating old town quarter. Nowadays, it’s a bustling, modern place with a great selection of cafes and restaurants and many annual festivals focusing on jazz, folklore and the sea. You will also spend two nights in Nida, the largest settlement on the Curonian Spit. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing seaside break or explore on foot, by cycle or canoe, or to jump across the border and explore the Russian part of the peninsula.
This cycling holiday in Lithuania is rated as “Easy / Moderate”. Modest daily distances and a route that is almost completely flat make this tour suitable for cyclists of basic fitness as well as families with children.
The holiday includes hand-picked accommodation and breakfasts (half-board is an option) in 3* & 4* hotels (category A) or 3* hotels (category B). Baggage transfers throughout the tour are included, as well as a comprehensive information pack, guide book and emergency support. The starting point of your cycling holiday in Lithuania is Klaipėda. Lithuania’s third-largest city is a former Prussian capital that was known for many years as Memel. The city is a fascinating mix of old and new and has a lovely old town quarter, with a distinct German flavour. Nowadays, it’s a bustling, modern place with a great selection of cafés and restaurants and many annual festivals focusing on jazz, folklore and the sea. Circular Tour visiting Palanga Resort
Approx 35 miles / 55 km
At 9.00 am, there will be a meeting to run through the itinerary for your tour and for the handover of rental bikes. Today you will follow the Seaside Cycle Route to the resort town of Palanga. The route heads north through the Giruliai Forest and the Seaside Regional Park. En route you will pass Plazė Lake and the “Dutchman’s Cap” – a coastal cliff that rises 25 metres above the sea. Throughout the ride there are many opportunities to divert to the seashore and take a dip or relax on the beach.
Palanga is the most popular seaside resort in Lithuania and boasts 18 km of sandy white beaches. On arrival you can visit the Botanic Park, the remarkable Amber Museum, the Sculptures Garden, relax on the beach, stroll along the huge pier and delight in the charming cafés and restaurants of the famous pedestrian street, J.Basanavičius. The return to Klaipėda is along the same route or a slightly different option.
Klaipeda to Šilutė
Approx. 28 miles / 44 km
Today your route starts a short transfer by minibus (25 miles / 40 km) to the small town of Veiviržėnai, from where you will cycle on picturesque countryside roads through coastal meadows to Šilutė. You will be cycling through the region known as “The Land of Storks”, home to the White Stork, which truly deserves its place as Lithuania’s national bird. En route you should stop in Švėkšna village and explore the estate with its beautiful park and the impressive neo-Gothic church of Saint Jacob the Apostle.
Šilutė was once a notable fish market and has a picturesque old market square and harbour, with cafés, restaurants and interesting old buildings.
Circular Tour visiting the Island of Rusnė
Approx. 29 miles / 45 km
(or rest day)
The third day of riding on your cycling holiday in Lithuania. This morning you will ride on the tiny lanes and bridle paths to Lithuania’s only island – Rusnė Island, which sits on the Russian border in the Nemunas River Delta Regional Park. The village of Rusnė is full of rural charm and its museum houses a traditional fisherman’s smallholding. When you stand on the bank of the Nemunas River in Rusnė you see the Russian “oblast” of Kaliningrad just 100 metres away across the river.
On the way back to Šilutė, visit the old water pumping station and the 19th century lighthouse in Uostadvaris Harbour.
Šilutė to Nida via Curonian Lagoon
Approx. 21 miles / 31 km
This morning you will cycle to Ventė Cape, also known as Ventė Horn. It is a true paradise for bird lovers, as it sits on one of the main north-south migration routes for many species. One of the first bird ringing stations in Europe was opened here in 1929 and up to 80,000 birds per year are caught in huge nets, ringed and then set free to continue their journeys. You can visit the museum of the Ornithological Station and learn all about the history of bird migration studies and the fascinating world of birds.
The observation deck of the 19th century lighthouse provides stunning views across the lagoon to the sand dunes of the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage site and your destination for today. After your visit to Ventė Cape, you will cross the lagoon by ferry (1.5-2 hours) to arrive in Nida, the largest settlement on the Curonian Spit. Your hotel lies at the heart of this former fishing village.
Rest Day in Nida or Cycle to Russia
Approx. 16-28 miles / 26-44 km
Nida is one of the most beautiful resorts in Lithuania and is the largest settlement on the Lithuanian half of Curonian Spit. Set between the Curonian Lagoon one side and the fine sandy beaches of the Baltic coast on the other, reminders of its former life as a fishing village are plain to see in the pretty wooden cottages and the harbour.
Nida is famous for its amber, which is trawled from the sea bed, and for its white sandy beaches, impressive sand dunes and pine forests. You can visit the Fisherman’s House, the Amber Gallery, the summer home of the famous writer Thomas Mann, relax on the beach, cruise in a traditional sailing boat, canoe to see the “Dead Dunes” and take your pick of the cafés and restaurants that line the lovely streets.
If you would like to cycle today and are up for an adventure, why not take the opportunity to visit Russia? Citizens of 53 countries can apply online for an e-Visa, which is free of charge and issued within 4 calendar days (including weekends and bank holidays). The only requirement is to have a travel insurance valid for Russia. (More information and e-Visa application form at: electronic visa.)
The border crossing is a little over 4 km from the hotel . Once in Russia, you could ride to:
- The Epha Dune (13 km from Nida): At 64 metres, the Efa dune is one of the the highest sand dunes in Europe. The shifting sands of the Curonian Spit were the bane of the lives of local villagers until they were tamed by Franz Epha, who pioneered techniques to stabilise the dunes with plants, thereby saving many villages from being buried under the sands.
- The Dancing Forest (18 km from Nida): A pine forest, planted in the 1960s to stabilise the sand dunes. Almost every trunk in the forest is curiously shaped, with loops, bends and corkscrews. The cause of the distortion of the trees remains a mystery, but is thought to have been caused by a caterpillar larvae, which damaged the stems of the trees when they were saplings.
- Rybachy Village (22 km from Nida): The largest settlement on the Russian part of the peninsula, Rybachy has become a tourist centre and boasts a very nice restaurant, with a view over the lagoon.
Nida to Klaipėda
Approx. 38 miles / 60 km
On the final riding day of your cycling holiday in Lithuania, you will follow the peaceful seaside bike path through the timeless landscape of the Curonian Spit. The route passes through pine forests, but never strays far from the coast, and it includes one or two dunes to scale – the only slopes of the tour!
On the way, you should stop at the “Dead Dunes” and spot the colonies of grey herons and cormorants, as well as in Juodkrante, a forming fishing village where the waters of the lagoon lapping along its shoreline provide a truly charming setting. On arrival in the village of Smiltynė you will take the ferry back to Klaipėda. (Fare approx €0.40, payable locally.)
On arrival in Klaipėda it´s time to hand over the hire bikes and prepare for the final night of your cycling holiday.
