Tours around Flanders on Centre-Based Cycling Holiday in Bruges

A centre-based cycling holiday in Bruges. The lovely city of Bruges – a UNESCO World Heritage site – is the perfect centre for a cycle touring holiday. With its medieval town centre, narrow canals, chocolate shops, bars, museums and imposing tower, Bruges is much more than a cycling destination.

This is a centre-based holiday, which includes hand-picked accommodation and breakfasts in lovely hotels close to the best that Bruges has to offer. It also includes a comprehensive information pack and route maps, as well as emergency support.

Cycling out of the city, you will pass through an enchanting landscape, where history and culture combine to provide an unforgettable cycling holiday. Each of the four routes included in the guide book, showcases distinct features of Northern Belgium, including picturesque villages, castles, churches, museums, canals, beaches, dunes and polders (areas of land reclaimed from the sea). The routes are of between 55 and 69 km. They are generally flat, very well way-marked and follow cycle paths and quiet roads which usually have very little traffic.

We can arrange the hire of good quality touring bikes for both adults and children, as well as electric bikes, tandems, trailer bikes, kids trailers and child seats.

Day 1
Arrive Bruges

After checking into the hotel you should take time to have a look around Bruges. (If you are only staying four nights and are hiring bikes, you will need to do one of the cycling tours on Day 1, as the bikes have to be returned on the evening of Day 4.)

This historic city is known as the “Venice of the North” and is widely regarded as the most beautiful city in Belgium. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the picturesque cobbled lanes and narrow canals, the lovely market square lined with soaring towers, the historic churches and fascinating museums – not to mention the numerous chocolate shops and bars mean that Bruges has it all!

Don’t miss the fabulous evening floodlighting and watch out for the sites in which the (now classic) film “In Bruges”, starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes, was filmed.

Days 2 to 4 or 5

On the 5-night cycling holiday in Bruges, you will take delivery of the hire bikes on the morning of day 2.

All of the routes on the Romantic Bruges Cycling Tour can be done in any order. The route book details four tours following a signposted cycling network, all of which are very easy to follow. The tours are briefly described below.

Please note that hire bikes have to be returned on the evening of the penultimate day. Therefore, if you are only staying four nights and you are hiring bikes you will need to do one of the cycling tours on Day 1.

Route 1
Castles around Torhout & Wijnendaele
(Approx 43 miles / 69 km)

The city of Torhout is situated in the Bruges woodland and wetland, in the heart of West-Flanders. Until the beginning of the last century this area was very inhospitable. The dark woods, criss-crossed by bogs, were the domain of gangs of thugs. Meanwhile, feudal lords kept small farmers under their thumb. Torhout, the oldest town in the county of Flanders, located at the crossroads of ancient Roman military roads, was a real relief for travelling merchants. A safe, bustling and hospitable town. Today, the Bruges woodland and wetland has lost that ugly ambiance, but Torhout has lost none of its welcoming atmosphere.

You can cycle along safe, green bike paths all the way to Torhout and visit two of the most interesting castles in Flanders – d’Aertrycke, which was built in 1869, and Wijnendaele Castle, construction of which started in the 11th century.

Route 2
Damme, Knokke & The North Sea
(Approx 37 miles / 59 km)

On this tour you will visit some of the most picturesque towns & villages of Flanders. Damme is a lovely medieval town situated in the verdant Flemish polders, with a beautiful and historic town centre. Very few small towns have as many monuments as Damme: the gothic town hall, the Schellemill, the 13th century Sint-Jans hospital, the partially restored town walls. In the surrounding villages you will also find various architectural masterpieces that bear witness of the rich past of this region.

Knokke-Heist, the most elegant seaside resort of the Belgian coast, spares no effort to make the cyclist feel at home. The location is ideal: the healthy north-sea air, the vast rural plains of the polders and miles of cycle routes taking you across the beautiful countryside.

Route 3
Lissewege, De Haan & The North Sea
(Approx 35 miles / 55 km)

On this tour, you will visit Lissewege, a charming polder village, with a little canal flowing through the centre, and De Haan, a village which has preserved the 19th century “Belle Epoque” beautifully.

Route 4
The Park, Castle & Nature around Bulskampveld
(Approx 35 miles / 55 km)

On this tour, you will cycle along the canal that links Bruges and Ghent. The Bulskampveld Visitors’ Centre is housed in the castle at Bulskampveld Provincial Estate. Here you can find out all about the estate and the surrounding countryside.

Another popular place to visit is Male Castle & Abbey, which was once the main castle of the Duke of Flanders.

Final Day (Day 5 or 6)
Departure from Bruges

There are direct flights from Brussels to most cities. However, what’s the rush? Why not take time to explore more of Belgium before you leave? We can easily arrange an extension in Bruges for as long as you like, organise another tour or book other hotels, transfers and activities. Please ask!
