After checking into your hotel you should take time to have a look around Brussels. Things happen in Brussels! Not just because it’s the capital of 500 million Europeans but also because there is an exciting cultural, artistic and social scene.
Brussels with its historic beauty, galleries, small streets and multicultural soul, is one of the greenest cities in Europe. “Must Sees” for every visitor are the great market square, the Atomium, the Parlamentarium, Manneken Pis and the Art Nouveau buildings, the icons of the city. Brussels is full of hidden treasures!
Brussels to Mechelen
(Approx 65 km / 41 miles)
After breakfast you can collect your hire bikes and really start your cycling tour in Belgium! First, a gentle ride will take you to Leuven, the the capital of the province of Flemish Brabant. Leuven is a prominent brewing centre and the home of the oldest university in Belgium. The picturesque centre of this small city is well worth a visit.
Next stop, Mechelen. With its superb central square, impressive cathedral and over 300 other listed buildings and monuments, Mechelen is one of Flanders’ most historic cities. The must-see places are probably the cathedral of Saint Rombout and the palaces of Margarete of York and Margarete of Austria, whilst the toy museum must be at the top of the list for the young and the young-at-heart!
Mechelen to Bornem
(Approx 30 km / 22 miles)
Today´s ride is just a short trip along the rivers Rupel and Schelde to Bornem. Before leaving Mechelen, why not take the chance to hop on the train for the 15-minute journey into Antwerp, Belgium’s second city and biggest port? Antwerp’s lovely medieval centre, cobbled lanes, riverside fortress and impressive cathedral make it a worthwhile detour on your cycling tour.
Bornem to Ghent
(Approx 65 km / 41 miles)
Ghent is the historical centre of Flanders and is a university town and cultural hub. Its attractive pedestrianised centre and medieval landmarks such as: the cathedral of Saint Bavo, with its world famous painting of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by Jan van Eyck; the 12th-century Gravensteen castle; and the Graslei, a row of guildhalls beside the Leie river harbour; make Ghent one of the most popular places to visit in Flanders.
Ghent to Bruges
(Approx 50 km / 31 miles)
The final stop on your cycling tour in Belgium is the historic city of Bruges, which is known as the “Venice of the North” and is widely regarded as the most beautiful city in Belgium. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the picturesque cobbled lanes and narrow canals, the lovely market square lined with soaring towers, the historic churches and fascinating museums (not to mention the numerous chocolate shops and bars) mean that Bruges has it all!
Don´t miss the fabulous evening floodlighting of the city and watch out for the sites in which the (now classic) film “In Bruges” starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes, was filmed.
Bruges – De Haan – Bruges
(Approx 60 km / 37 miles)
Today there is no need to pack your bags, as you will be returning to the same hotel in Bruges. After breakfast, you can ride along the canals to the picturesque village of Lissewege and continue to the lovely coastal town of De Haan, where you can take a dip in North sea or just relax on the beach.
If you prefer, you could also enjoy a day of shopping, a boat ride on the canals, or take in some of the sights of Bruges, with its many museums and historic buildings. The lovely port of Ostend is also just a short train ride away.
Hire bikes are available until 7.00 pm.
Departure from Bruges
After breakfast it´s time to leave Bruges. There are regular trains to Brussels (not included), or we can arrange a private transfer.
