Itinerary Details

Day 1
Arrive Schärding

After checking into the hotel, collecting hire bikes and reviewing the route documentation, you should take time to have a look around Schärding, which is a major port on the Inn River, and maybe take a cruise along the Inn to Passau.

Day 2
Schärding to Area of Engelhartszell
(Approx 27 miles / 42 km)

Meals: Breakfast

Today you will start to cycle the Danube from Schärding to Vienna!  The first port of call is the historic city of Passau, which is known as the “City of Three Rivers,” because it is there that the River Inn joins with the Danube and the Ilz. Passau is notable for its Gothic and Baroque architecture. The Cathedral of St. Stephen houses the second-largest church pipe organ in the world and is a true masterpiece of Italian Baroque.

You leave Passau on the Danube cycle path and almost immediately cross the border into Austria.  You are soon cycling through wonderful scenery on the way to the only Trappist monastery in Austria at Engelhartszell (where you can sample delicious liqueurs).

Day 3
Area of Engelhartszell to Aschach/Eferding
(Approx. 27 miles / 42 km)

Meals: Breakfast

Today a truly magnificent highlight awaits you along your way: the famous meander “Schlögener Schlinge”, where the River Danube makes a complete 180 loop. A short but steep climb up to the Schlögener view point gives you a breathtaking view across the Danube valley before you leave the wooded hills of the Upper Danube on your way to Aschach.

Day 4
Aschach/Eferding to Linz
(Approx. 19 miles / 30 km)

Meals: Breakfast

Today you will traverse the expanse of the Eferdinger basin on the way to the flourishing city of Linz.  This modern city is the capital of Upper Austria.  Historic buildings, impressive churches and one of the largest medieval main squares in Central Europe contrast with striking contemporary architecture.  Linz is also home to the world’s steepest mountain railway, the ‘Postlingbergbahn’. The views from the top are amazing and, for the kids, a ride on the Grottenbahn “Dragon Express” train is not to be missed!

Day 5
Linz to Perg
(Approx. 24 miles / 35 km)

Meals: Breakfast

You may want to extend your stay in Linz before continuing your journey into the Strudengau. (Extra nights can be arranged at any point along the route.)  Highlights of today´s route include a short diversion to the town of Enns, which is the oldest town in Austria.

Day 6
Perg to Marbach
(Approx. 32 miles / 50 km)

Meals: Breakfast

Today you cycle through tranquil meadow lands to the legendary Strudengau region. Highlights of today´s route include the Celtic village at Mitterkirchen, the majestic church in Baumgartenberg, the romantic castle of Clam and the beautiful Baroque village of Grein, home to the oldest theatre in Austria.

Day 7
Marbach to Krems
(Approx. 32 miles / 50 km)

Meals: Breakfast

Today your journey will take you into the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape of the Wachau Valley, where gently sloping vineyards and orchards are dotted with monasteries and castles. On your way to the lovely town of Krems, you will pass through the wine-growing villages of Spitz, Weißkirchen and Durnstein. The beautiful 900-year-old Baroque Benedictine abbey overlooking the city of Melk can be seen from many kilometres away and is well worth a visit.

Day 8
Krems to Tulln
(Approx. 26 miles / 41 km)

Meals: Breakfast

Today you will follow the River Danube as it meanders through Lower Austria towards Tulln.

Tulln is one of the oldest towns in Austria.  Because of its abundance of parks and other green spaces, the town is often referred to as “Blumenstadt”, meaning City of Flowers.

Day 9
Tulln to Vienna
(Approx. 24 miles / 35 km)

Meals: Breakfast

Today’s ride will take you past the impressive monastery at Klosterneuburg and on through wooded parkland to arrive at the famed city of Vienna, one of Europe’s most beautiful, elegant and interesting cities.

Day 10
Departure from Vienna

Meals: Breakfast

There are convenient flights from Vienna to most cities, or we can arrange your transport back to Schärding if you prefer. However, what´s the rush? Why not take time to explore Vienna before you leave? We can easily arrange an extension for as long as you like. (Most guests agree with us that 3 days in Vienna is the minimum required to do this wonderful city justice!)
